Fugitive Arrested in Abia State after Escaping police detention.

Mr. Sylvester Ogueri, arrested on August 17, 2023, for his involvement in a gay marriage celebration in Asaba, Delta State, escaped police custody under mysterious circumstances. Following his escape, a manhunt was launched following his escape. 

Mr. Ogueri was declared wanted in the 36 states including FCT, Abuja by the authorities because of his serious involvement and promotion of LGBTQ in Nigeria. 

On November 30, 2024, he was found in Abayi, Aba, Abia State, where local vigilantes detained him, accusing him of immoral of immoral and forbidding activities in an uncompleted building. In an extreme act of mob justice, some locals even attempted to set him on fire.

Before the situation escalated, police intervened and rescued Mr. Ogueri, transporting him to a nearby station. His escape raised concerns about security at police facilities, and authorities are investigating how he managed to break free and identify those who helped him.

This case has sparked debates about vigilante justice. While the vigilantes were praised for capturing Mr. Ogueri, their violent actions have been criticized by law enforcement. The Nigerian police have urged citizens to report suspects to authorities instead of taking matters into their own hands. The incident has also raised concerns about the treatment of LGBTQ individuals in Nigeria, where homosexuality is illegal, leading to broader discussions on human rights, legal enforcement, and social norms

As investigations continue. police are reviewing security protocols and working to uncover any potential criminal activities related to Mr. Ogueri. Lawmakers and human rights groups have called for a thorough investigation, emphasizing the importance of proper legal procedures and addressing mob justice. The case remains under public scrutiny, and authorities have pledged to ensure justice while addressing the broader implications of vigilante justice in Nigeria.
