The Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) old terminal in Lagos is set to be closed by October 1, according to Minister Keyamo.
The closure may disrupt flight activities temporarily unless apron capacity issues at the new terminal are resolved. Despite the new terminal being commissioned by former President Muhammadu Buhari in March 2022, fewer than 10 of the 22 foreign airlines operating in the country have relocated due to the new terminal’s apron not accommodating wide-bodied aircraft.
Keyamo mentioned plans to create space for the apron by relocating existing hangars and procuring buses for passenger transit. Additionally, he suspended airport concession and the national carrier projects until he briefs President Bola Tinubu.
He expressed frustration over the old terminal’s condition and the lack of provisions for big planes in the new terminal’s design, highlighting the importance of the Lagos gateway as a major revenue source for FAAN. The goal is to move airlines to the new terminal by October 1 and temporarily shut down the old terminal for renovations.
