Nigeria’s Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has personally closed the border at Illela, Sokoto state, in response to President Bola Tinubu’s directive. The border closure is a measure against the military junta in Niger Republic.
The coup in Niger led to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) imposing sanctions, including freezing Niger Republic’s assets in ECOWAS member states, suspending financial transactions, and instituting a no-flight zone for commercial flights to and from Niger.
Travel bans have been imposed on military officials involved in the coup attempt and anyone accepting positions in the military government.
